Ways to Perform a Perfect SAT Test

SAT or Site Acceptance Test is carried out at the buyer’s premises (plant, pipeline, platform or any other end user’s location) to ascertain the performance of the systems and equipment. The buyer’s team in association with the seller’s or original equipment manufacturer’s specialists would undertake the test, as per the standard test procedure.

All the parameters, at the maximum permissible operational range, would be evaluated during the process. This system verification has been a vital part of delivery and handing over. The manufacturer should assume the responsibility to resolve the technical glitches or functional limitations observed during the test.

In case of any variance in the system parameters from what was promised or improper operation, the customer may not sign the acceptance report. The seller will have to make good the anomalies reported vide applicable “Punch Point List” for formal sign off of the SAT Certificate and handover for Buyer’s/ End User’s operations team.

Similar to SAT, there’s another test named FAT or Factory Acceptance Test. As the name indicates, FAT is done at the factory premises itself after manufacturing and assembly. The test would be conducted by the manufacturer to analyse the condition and functioning of the systems before delivering them to the customer’s site.

The FAT may be performed in the presence of the buyer or without. The Quality Assurance team would be monitoring the complete testing and confirming the system functionality.

How to Perform a Perfect SAT?

Site Acceptance Test (SAT) is a mandatory requirement for assuring the customer of the readiness of the system. The testing also eliminates the possibility of complaints from the buyer, on lacunae observed. The manufacturer’s team can obtain a signed certificate from the buyer’s representative regarding the functioning of the system.

The perfect SAT would need a set of laid down processes that are to be complied with properly. Only authorized, qualified, members should engage in the system testing. Regardless of the system being a new installation (green field) or an addition/integration to an existing system (brown field), the team should be prepared to handle any kind of issue.

  • Visual Examination – Visual examination of every component is necessary before the commencement of a functional test. The major and minor parts have to be given equal importance. Avoid hurrying through the visual examination thinking that everything is okay as it might have been checked during the pre-despatch inspection from the factory. “Touch and Confirm” is a methodology normally followed during a visual examination. The same helps in affirming that the panels are intact and fastening is done properly.
  • Gauges and Ventilations – The connections and cables have to be intact and fastening members flushed. The gauges, ventilation systems are to be examined for proper installation and settings. Ensure that the vent system is not choked. Inadequate venting can lead to an uncontrolled increase in temperature and pressure, causing system failure.
  • Switch Positions and Controller Settings – The manual would state the positions of switches and settings of the controller before starting the system. Inspect each switch as well controller settings to make sure those are in the right position (on/off or close/open).
  • Mechanical cum Software Interface – Digital technology has transformed the functioning of every system nowadays. The mechanical controller has given way to digital touchscreen panels and control systems. There is equipment that acts as the interface between the mechanical device and software systems. Test and verify the interlocks or the interface.
  • Safety Systems Calibration – Systems will have safety features in place to prevent any damage to man and material during malfunction or failure. The safety systems would normally vent out the excessive pressure or temperature to preclude collateral damages. The safety system calibration may be performed at idling functions.
  • Cold and Hot Testing of The Equipment – Prior to raising the system to the maximum operational limits, cold testing must be undertaken. Keep the system at the predefined idling scenario and monitor. The system may be run at idling rpm subsequent to satisfactory cold testing. Variations in parameters or system fluctuation are not acceptable. Shut down the system and troubleshoot the cause if there are any performance flaws. Complete system functioning inspection, at 100% efficiency, can be performed after satisfactory performance during the hot testing.

Once the SAT is completed satisfactorily, the manufacturer’s/ Seller’s representative should perform the following:

  • Briefing Regarding the System – The specialist from the OEM should brief the operator regarding the system thoroughly. Of course, the buyer’s team would be aware of the system and its functioning, still, it is the responsibility of a reliable seller to ensure a proper briefing.
  • Explaining the User Manual – Rather than just handing over the user manual, explain the relevant sections to the buyer’s team. Clarify their doubts if any.
  • Warranty and Guaranty Terms – Some of the accessories and spares in the system might be under guarantee and some others under warranty. It would be a good idea to educate them about the items under guarantee and warranty.
  • Approved Spares List – Provide an approved spare list to the buyer. To help the buyer in procuring the right spares that would offer trouble-free functionality throughout the lifetime.

The compliance of SAT, as explained here, would be beneficial for both manufacturer and buyer.
