Aesthetix was pleased to have been able to provide innovative security and communications solutions for the Karachaganak Expansion Project (KEP), one of Karachaganak Petroleum Operating BV's crown jewels, with a mandate to develop one of Kazakhstan's most strategically significant oil and gas assets. Together with SICIM, Aesthetix has designed, manufactured, tested, and commissioned systems with operational reliability and safety in some of the most extreme conditions in the energy sector.
The Karachaganak Expansion Project is planned to sustain and potentially increase liquid hydrocarbon output, while optimizing gas processing and utilization to maximize the productive life of the Karachaganak field. This large-scale initiative includes significant infrastructure additions, such as new gas re-injection compressors, dehydration units, and trunklines for gas and fluid transport.
KEP has been segmented into phases, and KEP-1A was accomplished in September 2024 by adding the fifth re-injection compressor for gases. The current phase, KEP-1B, includes the addition of a sixth compressor to provide reservoir pressure support and support to maintain production growth.
Aesthetix's contribution to KEP spans the entire security and communications infrastructure lifecycle—from initial design and engineering through assembly, rigorous testing, and commissioning. The systems implemented are
CCTV (Closed-Circuit Television): Perimeter-to-perimeter surveillance system to safeguard perimeter and sensitive space areas, providing real-time visual surveillance and incident detection.
ACS (Access Control Systems): Secure access points to control facility access, permitting entrance only by authorized personnel for sensitive spaces.
PIDS (Perimeter Intrusion Detection Systems): Smart sensors and motion detectors contribute to perimeter security through the detection of unauthorized entry.
LAN (Local Area Network): Fault-resilient and information-rich network design for simple communications and data sharing throughout the facility.
Telephone and PAGA (Public Address and General Alarm) Systems: Clear voice communications and alarm systems for normal operation and emergency coordination.
These double systems form a multi-level security system needed to protect KEP's large and complex infrastructure and gain optimal operating efficiency.
Growth of operations in the Karachaganak field demands effective security systems to block attacks and illegal entry, sabotage of operations, and safety accidents. Physical security systems employed—e.g., barriers, fencing, CCTV, and access control—ensure effective perimeter defense and internal monitoring.
In addition, the emergency response operations are supported by secure means of communication, i.e., phone and PAGA, in order to facilitate timely coordination during an urgent situation. The multi-level protection guards the individuals, apparatus, and surrounding environment.
Along with physical security, the project infrastructure is also implementing cybersecurity controls. Operational technology is being protected against cyberattacks through network firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and data encryption. Security awareness training is also Aesthetix's highest priority, which instills a sense of awareness in the employees.
Efficient communications support is the behind-the-scenes equipment system for KEP operations. High-speed data transfer needed by SCADA systems is made available by the LAN, allowing processes to be easily monitored by operators and equipment to be remotely operated. Rapid response to operating changes and time savings are facilitated by this link.
Radio and paging voice communications systems ensure seamless contact between groups on the large facility site and maintain safety and productivity.
Having demonstrated proven success in providing bespoke security and communication solutions for high-end industrial projects, Aesthetix is the go-to partner of choice for the world's most prominent energy operators. Our association with SICIM on the Karachaganak Expansion Project demonstrates our dedication to attaining engineering and execution reliability under adverse conditions.
